Ecological Drought

Drought is a primary driver of fire risk in Hawaii and other Pacific Islands.  Drought is also a critical concern for agricultural producers and ranchers as well as forest restoration programs in the region.  The Wildland Fire Program is collaborating with the Miura Remote Sensing Lab in NREM to use satellite imagery to understand how ecosystems in Hawaii respond to drought.   The program also works with the US Forest Service Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry to synthesize our understanding of drought frequency, effects and response in Hawaii and other Pacific Islands.
